Amy Pond is hotter than the heat of a thousand suns in the Medusa Cascade.

Ok, I'm fed up with all of the crappy sci-fi shows like the new V. I have never watched any Doctor Who but keep hearing all of the positive reviews.
Where would be a good place to start? Which series?

Wow, where to start.. With over forty years of shows, it's hard to say, but you could start with the 2005 season and work your way up, then occasionally go back to some pivotal storylines of previous doctors. Maybe that would be a good theme for a meeting, a Doctor Who catch-up discusion.

Right after I posted this I checked out io9, which I haven't done in a few days. It figures they just posted this.

That's not bad... It talks about the new series being a "clean break" that's sort of true, but there are many fanboy flashbacks to previous events.
In fact, the villain in the first episode of the new series first appeared in 1972's "Spearhead from Space", which is the earliest episode I got to see as a kid. (luckily, our local PBS station aired the entire run of 3 Doctors spanning '72 to '83, so I got hooked young).

I remember it being on channel 9 when I was a kid but it never interested me. I was spoiled by Battlestar, Buck Rogers, and of course Star Wars.
